Mike Fox Obituary

Mike Fox

August 28, 1947 -

February 24, 2025

GRAY - Mike Howard Fox, 77, of Gray, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on August 28, 1947, Mike was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose warmth and wisdom touched countless lives. For 59 years, he shared a beautiful marriage with his beloved wife, Susan Lambert Fox, who remained his steadfast partner and best friend until his final day.

Mike proudly served in the Air Force, serving his country in Vietnam before returning home to build a life dedicated to service and community. His professional career included working as a truck driver for Mason Dixon, followed by more than 20 years of honorable service as a Johnson City Fireman, where he was respected for his courage and commitment to public safety.

Mike's dedication to his community of Gray extended far beyond his professional life. As a young man, he volunteered with the Gray Fire Department. Later, he coached softball teams, umpired high school baseball games, served as a basketball referee, and was an active member of the Ruritan Club. Through these various roles, he touched the lives of countless young people and community members, leaving an indelible mark on the place he called home.

Mike never met a stranger and was known for his gift of conversation and remarkable sense of humor that could brighten even the darkest days. He found joy in life's simple pleasures-spending time at the beach, riding bikes, reading good books, and challenging himself with sudoku puzzles. Mike found his greatest joy in family gatherings, whether celebrating holidays, attending his grandchildren's activities, or simply enjoying dinners together. His legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering support will continue to guide his family for generations to come.

Mike is survived by his wife Susan; daughters Angela Fox Taylor (Jerry) and Jennifer Fox Wiggs; and five cherished grandchildren: Allison, Lindsey, & Spencer Taylor, Trevor & Dylan Wiggs; one cousin, Sam Hall and other extended family.

A memorial service celebrating Mike's life will be held at Appalachian Funeral Home on Friday, February 28th. The family will welcome friends from 2 pm to 3:30 pm with a short service to follow at 3:30 pm. There will be a private committal service at Mountain Home National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research in Mike's memory.

Additionally, the family would like to sincerely thank the doctors, nurses, and staff from the D1 wing and hospice at the Veterans Hospital for their compassionate care of Mike.

Mike was always a fun guy to be around because you never knew what he would say next. And usually whatever it was made you laugh. Farewell to a good firefighter and friend. Godspeed to his family.

Prayers and condolences to the family and friends.
I never worked the same shift or station with Mike , but remember him well as a firefighter. He was always respected by his peers , having his usual manner about him . His family has the right to be proud of all he did in the fire service and for his community.
