Elizabeth O'Neill Rice Obituary

Elizabeth Ann O'Neill Rice, 76, passed away suddenly on September 12, 2025, in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Elizabeth was born on July 30, 1949, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the late John J. O'Neill and Mary (Bradfield) O'Neill. She attended St. Anne's school in the Port Richmond neighborhood, before her family moved to Cornwell Heights, Bucks County.

Elizabeth graduated from St. Hubert's High School in 1967 and earned her bachelor's degree from Holy Family College in 1973. She went on to study at Hahnemann Medical College, graduating in 1977, and completed a surgical residency in Wheeling, West Virginia, where she met her beloved husband of 47 years, John. She later completed a radiology residency in Reading, Pa., and a fellowship in breast imaging at the University of Virginia.

Over the course of her career, Elizabeth practiced medicine in Charlottesville, Virginia, Reading, Pa. and the Lehigh Valley, where she was known for her dedication, skill, compassion, and humor, retiring in 2015.

Following her retirement, Elizabeth embraced her artistic passion. She became an accomplished pastel artist, specializing in portraits, and attended workshops, shows and conferences throughout Pennsylvania, New England and Virginia. In addition to her art, she enjoyed cooking and music, and she cherished opportunities to travel - especially to Ireland, the country where she felt a deep connection to its people, its craic and its history.

Elizabeth was most proud of her two sons and their accomplishments. She is survived by her husband, John; her sons, Andrew (Kelly) and Christopher (Cleo); and her grandchildren, Archer, Palmer, and Grace. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will remember her warmth, creativity, and laugh. Elizabeth will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the benefit of knowing her.

The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 20, 2025 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg, VA, where the funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. A reception will follow the service at the funeral home.

Melissa and I cannot imagine what John and his sons are going through. Liz was a wonderful woman, with a dry sense of humor and always fun to be with. She will be missed.
