Maxine Hopson Obituary

Maxine "Marie" Tester Hopson

July 1, 2025

UNICOI CO. - Maxine "Marie" Tester Hopson, 92, of the Marbleton community in Unicoi County passed peacefully into the welcoming arms of her loving Lord and Savior on Tuesday, July 1, 2025 at the NHC care facility in Johnson City, TN. 2 Timothy 4:7-8, I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day-and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

Marie was the oldest and last surviving of the five children of Paul and Bessie (Taylor) Tester of Johnson City, TN. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 61 years J. H. Hopson (d. 2011) originally of Red Hill, NC and her grandson Kelly R. White (d. 2017) of Johnson City; sisters Wanda Jean Adams (Bob), Dorothy Ingram (Robert), Mary Lee Shirley and brother Frank Tester (Barbara). She is survived by her daughter Angela Sheehan (Timothy), sons Jerry Hopson (Tina), Barry Hopson (Jodie) and Doug Hopson; grandchild Marley Hopson and great-grandchild Esme Hopson; two step grandchildren Cory Fitzsimmons and Katie McCracken (Jacob) and step great-grandson Mason McCracken; special niece Debbie Estep of Dungannon, VA; and special brother-in-law Wayne "Bud" Shirley (husband of Mary Lee Shirley, deceased).

Marie attended Happy Valley High School and was married to J. H. in 1950. She and J. H. were devout Christians and decades long members of the Marbleton Freewill Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a devoted homemaker. She worked in food service in various capacities for many years. She loved teaching Sunday school classes to children and adults throughout her life. She and her husband J.H., sister Mary and close friend J. M. Whitson formed the gospel quartet "The Four Believers" that sang to church congregations throughout the local area over many years.

The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to the staff of the NHC Health Care Facility on North Roan St. and Caris Healthcare of Johnson City for the kindness shown to Marie in her brief but challenging time in their care. Also, a special thank you to Barbara Foxworth of In-Home Services for her years of tender care.

Visitation will be at Tetrick Funeral Services on Monday, July 7th from 6-7PM. The funeral service will follow with the Reverend Tim Broyles and the Reverend Kenneth Grindstaff officiating. Interment will be at the Evergreen Cemetery Mausoleum in Erwin, TN on Tuesday, July 8th at 10:00AM. Pallbearers will be Jerry Hopson, Barry Hopson, Doug Hopson, Tim Sheehan, Jim Holland and Randy Oaks. Those who wish to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 9:45AM. May God bless and keep you all.

Angela, I'm so sorry for your loss. I remember going home with you from church years ago and her fixing the best lunch. She was always so kind to me.
