JOHNSON CITY - It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Maurice Whitmire, 82, of Johnson City. It is also with great joy that we announce that he is home with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Maurice had a strong desire to study the Word and share everything he learned with others through his God given gift of teaching. He had a talent for bringing Biblical characters to life, encouraging listeners to want to know more.

Maurice was born in Rosman, NC into a close-knit family of 5 children where he was taught to love the Lord, live a life with high moral character, and a strong work ethic. In high school he was known for his athletic ability and talent on the basketball court, receiving numerous awards.

Through his work as a home builder, he was able to hone his natural creativity into true craftsmanship. He built several homes with very challenging designs, enjoying the complexity and opportunities to grow.

Maurice was proud to serve his country as a US Marine. He was proud to serve his Lord in whatever church God led him to. Maurice was a faithful member of Heritage Baptist Church from soon after moving to Johnson City.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Pat Cook Whitmire, his beloved daughter Cynthia Whitmire Dudash (Robbie), and step-grandsons Alex and Tyler, his sisters Melba Hill (Joe), Renolga Huggins (Ronnie), Teresa Whitmire, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his mother Lula Whitmire, his father Lawrence Whitmire, and his brother Bryce Whitmire (Theresa).

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Samaritan's Purse.

A funeral service for Maurice will be held at 12:00 noon Wednesday, January 28, 2026 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Pastor Reggie Weems officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:30 AM until the service hour. Graveside services will follow in Monte Vista Memorial Park at 2:00 PM. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
