Mary Evelyn Sluder Johnson August 4, 2024
JOHNSON CITY - Mary Evelyn Sluder Johnson (Rowena), 91, of Johnson City, passed away on Sunday, August 4th, 2024 at her home following an extended illness. Evelyn was a native of Greene County and was the daughter of the late William Lee and Kathleen Elizabeth Neal Sluder.
Evelyn was retired from Levi Strauss and Company. She enjoyed cooking, canning and baking, especially her homemade rolls for her family, friends, and church. Evelyn was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church and the Ambassadors for Christ Sunday School class.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by infant daughter, Penny and infant grandson, Stephen Michael; sister, Nancy Bell Droke; brothers, Hugh Edward Sluder, Billy Jay Sluder, Charles Austin Sluder, Bobby Lewis Sluder and Dwight Fleming Sluder. Survivors include son, Michael Johnson (wife Tammy); daughter, Carla J. Galanides (Galen); precious grandchildren, Shawna Hamilton (husband Gregory) and Lauren Galanides; great-grandchildren, Cheyanna and Brantlee Hamilton; and many special nieces and nephews. Also, beloved neighbors Evelyn Reilman and Vincent Walz.
The funeral will be conducted on Wednesday, August 7, 2024 (her 92nd birthday) at Morris Baker Funeral Home at 12:00 pm with pastor Chuck Babb officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, at 11:00 am. The graveside committal will follow at Edgefield Methodist Church in Piney Flats. Reception will be held in their community center immediately following the committal. Pallbearers will be David Arnold, Gregory Hamilton, Parke McKee, Chris Rhyne, David Roe, and Vincent Walz.
The family is forever grateful for the loving care of our caregivers Shannon Briggs and Victoria Whaley. The family would also like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses, and aides of Amedisys Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sinking Creek Baptist Church at 2313 Elizabethton Hwy., Johnson City, TN 37601.
