Mary Hyde Obituary

JOHNSON CITY - Mary Ann Hyde passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at the age of 100. Born in Lake County, FL, on January 21, 1923, to Margaret Thomas and Herman C. Long, she spent her childhood in Eustis, FL, before moving to Johnson City, Tennessee where she was Miss Johnson City, attended Virginia Intermont Junior College and later East Tennessee State University. Always one who went after what she wanted, Mary Ann joined Capital Airlines (later merged with United) as a stewardess in 1943 and relocated to Washington, DC.

Throughout her life, she was known for her poise, grace, and beauty and was featured in Pond's national advertising campaign, "She's lovely, she's engaged, she uses Ponds." She captured the attention of aviator and entrepreneur Arthur C. Hyde of Bethesda, Maryland, and they were married in 1945. She raised a family of three, Art, Ann, and Carolyne Hyde. A lifelong patron of the arts and music, she was a member of the National Society of Arts and Letters, Washington's National Democratic Club, Bethesda Garden Club, Congressional Country Club, and other prominent Washington area organizations.

Mary Ann fell in love with Aspen on a skiing trip, and the family moved there in 1969. She was known for being a gracious hostess, and for her annual legendary holiday party in Aspen. She was a trustee of The Aspen Music Festival and School and served on their National Council for the rest of her life. She was a member of the Aspen Art Museum, Aspen Institute, and Maroon Creek Club.

After four decades in Aspen, Mary Ann spent the last years of her life in Johnson City. She was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, Martha Wexler Bible Study, and Johnson City Country Club.

She is survived by her children, Arthur "Art" Hyde, Jr. of Aspen, Ann Hyde of Colorado, and Carolyne Hyde of Denver; granddaughter, Olivia Hyde of New York City and was predeceased by her brother Herman C. "HC" Long, Jr. and sister Marguerite Mettetal.
