Marilyn Jacobs Obituary

Marilyn Bates Jacobs

October 16, 1940 -

May 27, 2025

Marilyn Bates Jacobs, known as Mimi by those who loved her-beloved mother, grandmother, and friend to many-passed away peacefully on May 27, 2025, at the age of 84. She was born in Philadelphia, PA, on October 16, 1940. Marilyn graduated from Virginia Intermont College and later retired from East Tennessee Medical Associates. She was a longstanding member of St. John's Episcopal Church.

Marilyn brought warmth, wit, generosity, and selflessness to everyone fortunate enough to cross paths with her.

She was the devoted mother of Tate Jacobs, Trish Lill (Michael), Michael Jacobs, and Matthew Jacobs (Jennifer), and the cherished grandmother of Taylor Lill, Ellie Borchert (Travis), Alec Jacobs, Maggie Jacobs, and Katie Jacobs. Her nurturing spirit extended far beyond her immediate family. In Mountcastle Hills, she was "Mimi" to an entire neighborhood. Whether offering a kind word, a warm meal, homemade iced tea, or a listening ear, Marilyn's door-and heart-were always open. You knew it was time to come home when you heard the bell ringing.

Known for her quiet yet loving personality and playful spirit, Marilyn lived life with a spark that was uniquely her own. She was selfless and full of life, with just the right touch of mischief. She especially loved playing cards, always happy to deal in anyone willing to sit at the table with her-likely with a competitive twinkle in her eye. She possessed unwavering strength, and it showed.

Marilyn's impact reached far beyond her family. She was admired, respected, and looked up to by all who knew her. She embodied the principle of "love thy neighbor," showing compassion and kindness to everyone, every day. Her love will be felt for years to come, and her memory will live on in the stories shared, the laughter around card tables, and the kindness passed forward by those who loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wesley and Margaret Bates; her brothers, Wesley and John Bates; and her sister, Nancy Bates.

A celebration of Marilyn's life will be held on Sunday, June 1, at 2:00 p.m. at Morris-Baker Funeral Home in Johnson City, under the direction of Rev. Paul Helphinstine. Marilyn's family will receive friends from 12:00-2:00 p.m. All are welcome to join in remembering her remarkable life and the joy she brought into the world.
