Margaret Berry Obituary

Mrs. Margaret Anne "Margie" "Mom-Mom" Berry June 28, 1932 - September 1, 2024

JONESBOROUGH - Mrs. Margaret Anne "Margie" "Mom-Mom" Berry, age 92, Jonesborough, passed away Sunday, September 1, 2024, at her residence.

Mrs. Berry was born in Washington County, Tennessee on June 28, 1932, to the late James Bethel & Dollie Vestal Horne Potter. She was also preceded in death by her husband of more than 55 years, Albert Berry, son, Jeffrey Alan Berry, grandson, Elijah Taylor Berry and a daughter-in-law, Kathryn Moore Berry.

She was a charter member of Trinity Baptist Church, she served on the early organizational committees, including two building steering committees. She was a member of the Challengers Sunday School Class, where she was class Fellowship Leader for several years. She was also a member of Women on Mission. Before becoming a member of Trinity, she had been a member of First Baptist Church in Jonesborough, where, beginning while still in college, she taught the Beginner Sunday School Class for over 20 years.

Mrs. Berry was a graduate of Jonesborough High School and East Tennessee State University. She was a Teacher in the Washington County Schools for 34 years, teaching at Boones Creek Middle School, Jonesborough High School, and David Crockett High School. At David Crockett High School she taught French, English, and Journalism. She served as yearbook advisor of the PIONEER for 18 years. She also developed the first advanced placement English class at David Crockett High School and was teaching this class at the time of her retirement. As a part of this class, she instigated a school literary magazine REFLECTIONS. She was named Excel Classroom Teacher and Teacher of the Year twice. After her retirement she became a member of LiterArti Reading Group in Jonesborough, where she was able to enjoy one of her favorite hobbies, reading.

She enjoyed gardening (flowers), knitting, spending time with her grandchildren, and being with her friends. She loved dearly her family, her church, her Sunday School Class, her students, and her friends. Her primary concerns were always about children. Her greatest wish for her life accomplishments was that she had been able to make a difference in the life of a child.

Mrs. Berry was a wonderful teacher as I had her for both English and yearbook staff. She taught me much about the language and much more about life. She was indeed a special lady and will be missed.
