Mable Hollis Mable Hollis was born in southern middle Tennessee in January of 1921 to young parents who grew up on farms in that area. Mable was primarily raised in Lawrenceburg, TN as one of two siblings, the other being her sister Frances who was two years younger. Mable was an excellent student, graduating as valedictorian of her high-school class and going on to study secretarial skills and business administration for her working career. She worked in this capacity for the Salant & Salant shirt making company in Lawrenceburg, all the while caring for elderly relatives and others as needed in the town. She told many fond stories of growing up in Lawrenceburg, where they had no car and did not need one as they walked everywhere, which really kept them in shape. They lived near the railroad and fed many hungry and transient men who had unofficially "hitched a ride" on the freight trains to find work elsewhere during the Great Depression. After World War II, she met and fell in love with Alexander Hollis, Jr. who was the son of a local Baptist pastor. They were married in 1951 shortly before he entered Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, KY. She partially supported them through four years of seminary by working as the executive assistant to the President of Standard Oil Co. of Kentucky (now Exxon-Mobil of Kentucky). She also used her expert secretarial skills to type all of her husband's seminary papers and all of his sermons over his 59 years of ministry in both Baptist churches and VA hospitals (as a chaplain). As a pastor's and chaplain's wife she touched countless souls in churches and communities with her diligent work ethic and gentle demeanor, with many younger women saying over the years that they always looked up to her as a great role model. She is survived by her son Mark, nephews, Thomas and Mike Nix, and many cousins throughout the southeast.
