Lisa Runner Obituary

Lisa Karen Adkins Runner May 16, 1957 - August 30, 2024

JOHNSON CITY - Lisa Karen Adkins Runner, 67, Johnson City, died peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of August 30, 2024 at the Bristol Hospice House, Bristol, TN.

Lisa was born on May 16, 1957, in Danville, Virginia and grew up in the nearby community of Climax where her father, E.T. Adkins, was a farmer, and her mother, Edna Bryant Adkins, taught elementary school. Lisa graduated with honors from Gretna High School where she also played basketball and softball. She also took piano lessons which led her to become a music major at Milligan College (now Milligan University) near Johnson City, Tennessee. It was at Milligan where she met her husband, Dr. David Runner, one of her music teachers, whom she married several years following her graduation.

Lisa's teaching career began in Greeneville, Tennessee where she taught elementary music. She later taught music at Anderson and Haynesfield Elementary Schools in Bristol, Tennessee. In 1985 the Runners moved to Birmingham, England where she and David taught at Springdale College. Upon returning to Tennessee in 1986, Lisa earned the Master's degree in Media Services and Instructional Technology from East Tennessee State University, after which she began teaching music education at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Lisa earned a Doctorate of Educational Leadership from Appalachian State and continued her teaching there, where in 2016, she was recognized with a UNC Board of Governors award for excellence in teaching. Her teaching included music education and general music courses. She also directed the Silver-Burdett/Pearson Summer Music Institute and summer courses in Orff Methodology certification. Lisa continued to teach and inspire her students and colleagues until she was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor (glioblastoma) in July of 2024.

Lisa is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Dr. David Runner, three cousins and their families: Mike, Charles, & Wade Bryant of Chatham, Virginia. In addition, Lisa was surrounded in her final days by a circle of beloved friends and colleagues who deeply morn her loss, including Dr. Jeananne Nichols, Dr. Maribeth Yoder-White, Lauri Hale, Douglas & Susan Grove-DeJarnett, Lucille Hart, and Caroline Darden. Her family is deeply indebted to the caring staff at Bristol Hospice House for their compassionate and tender care.

Memorial Service will be held at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at 2:30 pm with the Reverend Douglas Grove-DeJarnett officiating. A choir of friends, members of the Munsey Chancel Choir, and the Civic Chorale will provide music for the service. Interment will take place at the Bryant Family Cemetery, Chatham, VA on Friday, September 6, 2024, at 2:00 pm.

We met David and Lisa through Munsey church and a mutual friend Dr David Chi. Lisa played piano at out sons wedding 26 years ago and since then I became more closer to her. I started taking piano lessons as an adult and we had long discussions after church about the progress I was making. Her advice always was 'as long as you enjoy playing the piano and practice, you will be fine'. I was shocked to hear about her passing. David our heartfelt condolences. She will be dearly missed.

I met Lisa when we played softball for Munsey. Always with a smile and great cheerleader to her teammates. So thankful for those times. Lisa made a difference in so many lives at whatever she was involved in. Miss that smile!

A great loss but we all know she has joined the great heavenly choir and is now a part of the Lord´s glorious music. Lisa was also a great friend a fellow Munsey softball player in the past. Will miss her greatly for her loving smile and positive attitudes and uplift.

Lisa was a constant source of joy, positivity and love. As a close friend and colleague in the Hayes School, Lisa, or Lis as I called her, was always there to assist me with her advice and positive outlook. The profound impact she had on her countless students will forever flourish through their students.

Lisa and I grew up together! My grandparents lived in Climax, were Lisa grew up. We always enjoyed play outside together. Either at my grandparents or her house. Lisa was a wonderful friend! Her mother was my third grade school teacher! Rest in Peace!

I went to ASU back during the recession when getting a teaching job was challenging. Dr. Runner kindly suggested to take my Orff levels after graduation because as she said, "there were a lot more elementary schools than middle and high." I´ll forever be grateful for her advice because she got me hooked! Fast forward 13 years later and I´m still teaching general music. While teaching, Dr. Runner radiated joy. It was contagious. She modeled to us all that no matter what we do with our life, we should love every ounce of it. I think of all the hundreds if not thousands of educators she touched, and can´t help but to smile at all the children she has also indirectly impacted. Her legacy lives on through us all. Dr. Runner, we won´t let you down.

Lisa was my graduate assistant while I was director of the Doctoral Program in Education at Appalachian State University. Her contribution to the program, to my work, and to my life, is profound. She became not only a student but a close and treasured friend with whom I shared so many moments of joy, success, and adventure. She will live forever in my memory of our travels, our laughter, and our accomplishments.

Lisa was my very first music methods teacher while I was preparing to be a kindergarten teacher, and made me think I wanted to teach music instead. We met again at Orff levels and various workshops, and I always learned from and was inspired by Lisa and her steadfast character. She encouraged me when I was uncertain, and I will forever be grateful. My favorite memory of Lisa is learning a "Jingle Bells" dance from her in a parking lot with my dad looking at us like we were crazy! I thank God for letting Lisa be part of my life, and I´m praying for the family and all who will miss her dearly.

I first meet Lisa when we were in 9th grade. We became instant friends and have remained friends for the past 53 years. We supported each other our entire lives. She became a surrogate mother to our daughter Nancy when she went to Milligan University. She and David are "family" and she will be greatly missed, by the entire Schranz family!

Lisa was a wonderful music educator. She was such an encourager and inspiration to me. I learned so much from her through workshops and collaborating with her about student teachers from Milligan. She will truly be missed
