JOHNSON CITY - Kenneth Wayne Andes, 79, Johnson City, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, July 24, 2023, following a lengthy illness.
Wayne was a native and lifelong Washington County resident. He was a son of the late Carl Bradshaw "Spud" and Nell Geraldine Barnett Andes.
Wayne was a 1963 graduate of Lamar High School, where he excelled in basketball and track. He then joined U.S. Army, where he served in the 518th Military Police, and was Sergeant of his Motor Pool.
Following his discharge from the military, Wayne was employed with Sherwood Chevrolet as a Body Man, Griffith Motors as Body Shop Manager, then at Science Hill High School in the Vocational Department as a teacher of Auto Body Repair. He then began his career with State Farm Insurance as an Automobile Estimator, retiring in 2003 after twenty-five years of service. Shortly after retirement, Wayne worked part time and/or volunteered at Paint and Lacquer Supply and Olde Jonesborough Body Shop, to stay connected to the auto repair industry.
Wayne was a member and Deacon at Greenwood Baptist Church but was currently attending Southwestern Baptist Church.
He enjoyed traveling around the United States with his wife, and loved talking about his granddaughters, Liz and Tori. Wayne grew up an avid race fan, attending several NASCAR events and local short track races with his father, and then continued the tradition with his son. He also enjoyed spending time at his Barn, where he found peace in being outside, working on and building cars, trucks and tractors.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Phyllis Hill and Judy Clark, Judy's husband John, one brother, Michael R. Andes and his wife Marilyn.
Wayne is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Judith G. Andes; his son, Eric Wayne Andes and wife Jennifer, Townsend, DE; two granddaughters, Elizabeth "Liz" Andes, and Victoria "Tori", Andes, both of Townsend, DE; brother-in-law, Gary Hill, Johnson City; several nieces and nephews.
The graveside funeral service will be conducted Saturday, July 29, 2023, at 3:00 P.M., in the Mausoleum Chapel of Washington County Memory Gardens, with Rev. Robert English, officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Veterans Honor Guard DAV 39, Bluff City, TN. Entombment will follow services.
The family will receive friends prior to the service Saturday from 1:00 -2:30 P.M. in the East Parlor of Appalachian Funeral Home.
