Joyce Darlena Whitson Miller, 85, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday February 2, 2024. Darlena was born October 29, 1938, in Relief, North Carolina to the late Calvin Whitson and Nerva Barnett Whitson.
Darlena graduated from Tipton Hill School where she was an outstanding basketball player. After graduating, Darlena sought employment in the telecommunications industry, beginning as an operator and ending her career as a computer programmer after 35 years of service. After retirement she enjoyed being with her family, traveling, and cooking.
In addition to her parents, Darlena was preceded in death by five brothers, Farrel Whitson, Starlin Whitson, Charles Whitson, Ray Whitson, and Lee Whitson: three sisters, Alma Whitson, Mary Ray, and Mae Barnett.
Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Joel Dennis Miller; son, Greg Miller (Linda); beloved grandchildren, Andrew (Brie) and Allison; two sisters, Shirley Hughes, and Arlena Renfro; two sisters-in-law, Louise Miller, and Chloe Whitson; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend Carolyn Cunninham.
The family of Joyce Darlena Whitson Miller will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City. The funeral service will follow at 8 pm. The graveside committal service will be conducted at 2 pm Wednesday, in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Family and friends are requested to meet at the cemetery by 1:50 pm Wednesday.
