JOHNSON CITY - Joseph Shipley (Sonny) Morgan, 89, passed away on November 14, 2023, at NHC Healthcare of Johnson City. A native of Johnson City, Mr. Morgan was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church and a faithful member of the Virgil Anderson Sunday School Class. He also served in the U. S. Marine Corps prior to his graduation from ETSU. Following graduation, he was employed by IBM and lived in several locations, including Lexington, KY, and Boca Raton, FL, before returning to his hometown of Johnson City.
Joe was a kind and gracious gentleman who was appreciative of his many friends and loved ones. He was always smiling and welcoming to all those with whom he came in contact.
Joe was predeceased by the love of his life, Sarah "Sally" Morgan, who he adored. Joe and Sally were married for 59 years prior to her death in 2016.
He leaves to cherish his memory his Godson, Joel Ellis (Cathy) of Tampa, Florida, and sisters-in-law Carole Ferrell and Anna Belle Ferrell Edwards, in addition to special friends, Barbara Pollack, Valerie Stephens, Brenda and Larry Haynes, Linda and Danny Merino, and Shirley Cloyd. A heartfelt thanks to his personal and medical advocates: Erica Byrd, Sandra Shumaker, and Liz Hughes.
Appreciation is expressed to his loving caregivers Shannon Locke, Sharon Stover, and the staff of Section 2 at NHC.
At Mr. Morgan's request, a private graveside service will be held at the Veterans Administration Center at a date to be determined.
For those who prefer, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, 201 South Roan Street, Johnson City, Tennessee, 37601.
