LAKE OSWEGO, OREGON - John Perry Johnson, age 84, passed away in Lake Oswego, Oregon on October 5, 2023. Born and raised in Erwin, Tennessee, John is the son of the late William (Willie) and Edna Johnson and sister of Juliet Johnson Guffey of Erwin. John graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, served on active duty in the U.S. Army from 1960-1962 and eventually retired as a Chief Petty Officer from the U.S. Navy with over 20 years of military service. Always a supporter of public education, John had a long career as a high school history teacher, primarily at Waipahu High School in Hawaii. John enjoyed reading and learning about history, discussing current events and of course, watching University of Tennessee football games no matter where he was living. He spent the last six years with new friends at Mary's Woods Retirement Community.
John has left behind his wife of 53 years, Virginia Johnson of Lake Oswego, his daughter the Honorable Juliet Johnson Britton (Aaron); grandchildren, Lauren and Kyle Follansbee, all of Portland, Oregon, sister-in-law Joanie Camplin as well as several nieces and nephews, including Kim Guffey of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Chip (Christine) Guffey of Jupiter, FL, Tom Guffey of Tellico Plains, TN, and Kathleen Camplin of Redding, CA. Everyone will miss that laugh of his.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to the Parkinson Foundation, Humane Society, or the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Go Vols!
