John Morgan Hay III, died January 29, 2024, after a two-year battle with leukemia. He was born on February 20, 1946, in Kingsport, Tennessee and was the son of the late John M. Hay Jr. and Anne Bowman Hay.
He grew up in Burlington, North Carolina and Hickory, North Carolina and graduated from Hickory High School in 1964. He attended North Carolina State University and Gardner Webb University. John was a natural in the business world. He managed Woolworth stores in Tennessee, Virginia, and Florida and was District Manager for North Florida. He joined Wal-Mart and was District Manager for Western North Carolina until his retirement in 2006. He and Marsha retired to Johnson City, Tennessee in 2018.
John is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marsha Keller Hay, his son Dr. John M. Hay (Jennifer) of Austin, Texas; his daughter Kristin Polichnowski (Dr. Aaron) of Johnson City, Tennessee; five grandchildren, Channing, Evan, and Ellis Hay of Austin, Texas; Max and Henry Polichnowski of Johnson City, Tennessee; brother Clifford Hay (Melanie) of Summerville, South Carolina, and several nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his sister, Emily Hay Lee.
No services are planned. Those wishing to remember John may give to the American Cancer Society, St. Jude's Children Hospital, or a charity of their choice.
