February 4, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of John Virgil Freemon, who left this world to join his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. John was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and dedicated public servant.

John was born on April 24, 1945, in Lawrenceburg, TN, to the late Howard Payne and Joy Elizabeth (Holt) Freemon.

He earned numerous honors, including the National Defense Service Medal and two Bronze Stars. Returning from Vietnam, John graduated from Memphis Law School and dedicated 38 years to the Department of Children Services as an assistant to the Attorney General, advocating for justice, fighting against abuse, and protecting children across multiple counties in East Tennessee.

John was a member of Central Baptist Church. His untamed spirit created a lasting legacy of justice, compassion, and love, and his memory will forever shine in the hearts of his family and those he impacted throughout his life.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 52 years, Marsha; son, John David (Jennifer); grandsons, Aedan, Corwin, and Benjamin; daughter, Jennifer Elder (Rich); grandson, Jace; brothers, Dr. David Freemon (Mandy) and Robert Freemon, Esq.; sisters, Cookie Tankersley and Cathy Cunningham (Andy); stepmother, Nelle Freemon; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

John will be buried in Mountain Home National Cemetery.

Matthew 5:14-16 "Let your light shine, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven," 2 Timothy 4:7-8 "I have kept the faith... the crown of righteousness will be awarded to me," and Psalm 23:1-4 "The Lord is my shepherd" captures his life and faith. 23:1-4 "The Lord is my shepherd" captures his life and faith.

So sorry to hear this news. John was very patient and kind to a very young lawyer many years ago and I never forgot it. He will be missed.
