John Augustas Obituary

John Steven Augustas

June 1, 2025

John Steven Augustas, 77, of Bluff City, Tennessee, passed away on June 1st. He was born on March 7, 1948, in Boston, Massachusetts, to the late Steven Augustas and Helen Kalogeros Augustas. John's early life saw a significant change when his father passed away on April 5, 1953. Following this, John, his Mother Helen, and his brother George moved to Johnson City to be closer to her family. He was a proud graduate of Science Hill High School, Class of 1966. John dedicated over a decade to the culinary arts at The Peerless Steakhouse, a family business his Grandfather John Kalogeros had started in 1938. He honed his skills in hospitality both back and front-of-house alongside his Uncle Jim Kalogeros. Later, John worked as a truck driver for Mor-Flo Industries and various other local businesses.

Beyond his professional life, John was a man of diverse passions. He had a strong faith in Christ & enjoyed spending time at his Liberty Fellowship church, where he generously volunteered, sang, and found fellowship. A lifelong open road enthusiast, he loved riding his Harley-Davidson. Over the years, he found joy in the outdoors, including snow skiing, water skiing, or boating, and had a deep appreciation for classic muscle cars.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rebecca Brown Augustas, and his mother, Helen Kalogeros Augustas. He had no immediate heirs. He is survived by his brother, George Steven Augustas of Texas; his area cousins Gary Kalogeros and his wife, Nia, and Maria Kalogeros; and numerous other cousins also residing in Boston, Texas, and California.

John was one of the first ones to welcome me into church, from there on out, I knew he had the biggest love for Jesus, and for singing in the choir. I´ll forever miss him and miss Becky.

John was a high school friend at Science Hill and we graduated together in 1966. I also remember him at the Peerless Steak House where he and his Mother, Helen were always ready to meet and greet you. He will be missed by all who knew him. Rest in peace my friend.
