UNICOI - Joan Beryl Charman Tenney, age 86, of Unicoi, passed away on Friday, June 2, 2023, at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born in Maidenhead, England and Joan moved with her family to Unicoi after her husband retired from the United States Air Force.
Joan was of the Christian Faith. She was a devoted United States Air Force wife for twenty years, having lived in several states throughout the USA as well as overseas. Joan was a Certified Nursing Assistant at Asbury Place of Johnson City and Colonial Hills Nursing Home. She also worked as a private caregiver.
Joan loved to shop, drive her car, watch Fox News, listen to gospel music, cook, collect stuffed animals, clowns, and various nick knacks. She was a talented seamstress and she also enjoyed knitting. Joan's favorite flower was roses.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ellen Mary Claydon Charman; her son, Nicholas Myron Tenney on April 21, 2019; two brothers: David Charman and John Charman; one sister, Hazel Butcher; her toy poodle, Fluffy.
Joan leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband of sixty-five years, Mahlon Tenney, Sr.; three children: Mahlon "Mel" Tenney, Jr. of Johnson City, Romaine Tenney of Knoxville and Coralee Tenney Gilbert (Charles) of Unicoi; three grandchildren: Charles Gilbert, II, Shaun Tenney and Vanessa Webster; three great grandchildren: Arianna Webster, Shaun Tenney, Jr. and Ariah Tenney; brother, Peter Charman (Wendy) of England; sister, Betty Millington of England; several nieces and nephews also survive.
The Tenney family will receive friends on Monday, June 12, 2023, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Unicoi Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Mark Simmons will officiate the 11:30 a.m. funeral service. Joan's committal will be held at Mountain Home National Cemetery, historic site at 1:00 p.m. on Monday. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery by 12:55 p.m. on Monday.
