Jo Hughes Obituary
Jo Doris Hughes, 87, of Johnson City, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at the Johnson City Medical Center.
A lifelong resident of Johnson City, Jo Doris was born on May 5, 1937, to the late Otto and Mary Iva Whaley. She attended high school at Boones Creek High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Dan Hughes, on July 27, 1957, and last year they celebrated 67 years of marriage.
She attended Clark Street Baptist Church, where she and Dan were lifelong members.
Jo Doris cherished time spent with her family, particularly her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For the past 25 years, she and Dan enjoyed their winters in Titusville, Florida. They also loved traveling across the United States to support the Tennessee Vols. Above all, Jo Doris treasured her roles as a wife and mother. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, Jo Doris was preceded in death by her siblings, John Whaley, Harry Whaley, and Margie Gray.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Dan; sons, Danny E. (Karen) Hughes and Joey L. (Karen) Hughes; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sisters, Mary (Howard) Farthing and Betty (Wexler) Gray.
The family would like to thank Erwin Center on Aging and Health for their compassionate and respectful care given to Jo Doris.
Jo Doris’ family will receive friends from 12:00-1:00 pm on Friday, January 24, 2025, with the funeral immediately following, under the direction of Rev. Randy Hommel. The graveside service will commence at 2:00 pm at Monte Vista Memorial Park, under the direction of Pastor Willie Lunsford. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are directed to Clark Street Baptist Church Building Fund (200 Clark St, Johnson City, TN 37604).
