Jeffrey Campbell, Sr. November 8, 1943- May 31, 2024
ELIZABETHTON - Jeffery Grant Campbell Sr., 80, went to be with the Lord on May 31st 2024 surrounded by family.
Jeff was born in Hampton, TN in 1943 to Lloyd and Mary Campbell. His childhood was filled with mischievous adventures with his brothers, Errol, Rand and Mike, and his little sister, Jane. He graduated from Hampton High School and was a member of the famous 1960 State Champion Basketball team.
He attended Johnson Bible College where he played basketball, was a member of a vocal quartet, worked on the campus dairy farm and also led a weekend student ministry. His first student ministry was in Rogersville, TN, where he met his soulmate, Nancy. During his senior year, he ministered to Woodbine Christian Church in Corbin, KY.
In 1965, he married his soul mate, Nancy Rhea Greene. He and Nancy moved to Watauga, TN and served at Brick Christian Church for several years. They then served at First Christian Church in Johnson City as Youth Minister and it was there, they welcomed daughter, Wrendi Paige, in 1972.
During this time, Jeff received his master's degree from Emmanuel School of Religion and another from East Tennessee State University. He also enjoyed playing tennis and winning several league tournaments. Jeff also ministered to the Minneapolis Christian Church in Avery County, NC, during which time they were blessed with the addition of Jeffery Grant (JJ) Jr. in 1977
After moving to Rogersville to serve First Christian Church there, they welcomed their daughter, Kaci, in 1984. In addition to working in the community as a minister, he worked as a psychologist/counselor for Hawkins County Schools. He spent countless hours helping his wife Nancy, a preschool teacher, and was often known to the children as "Mr. Nancy." He also served as the President of the Ministerial Association for several years.
Jeff became director of East Tennessee Children's Home in Elizabethton and also ministered again with Brick Church in Watauga. He then served at Locust St. Church of Christ until his retirement.
Upon retirement, he served in leadership at First Christian Church in Elizabethton, continued offering family counseling, served as a deacon and then elder, and spent hours upon hours with his family. He was loved and adored by his grandchildren, Austin, Jacob, Charlotte, Gilbert and Margot and his great grandson, Wyatt. He leaves a legacy of joyful hope in the love of Christ to all who were lucky to know him.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 29th, at 11am at First Christian Church Elizabethton. The family will receive friends before the service at 10am in the sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jeffery Campbell Memorial Scholarship Fund at Johnson University. Checks should be made payable to JOHNSON UNIVERSITY and mailed to 7900 Johnson Drive, Knoxville, TN 37998 with a note that it is in memory of Jeff Campbell. Contributions can also be made online at www.JohnsonU.edu/donate with a memorial designation.
