Jim was born on July 19, 1938 in Knox County, TN to the late Robert Marshall Ross and Alma Martha Miller Ross. He was a member of Rehobeth United Methodist Church in Terrell and a United States Army Veteran. Jim was a dedicated physician in Catawba County and a community leader. Professionally, he served as Chief of Staff at Catawba Valley Medical Center and was an active member of the American Medical Association. He gave of his time to the Lions Club, the Wounded Warriors Project and the North Carolina Sheriff's Association. Jim lived his life to the fullest. He loved the Caribbean where he spent many days scuba diving, sailing, boating and fishing. An avid outdoorsman, he also enjoyed hunting and playing golf with his sons and close friends. At his home, his joy was gardening and he was especially fond of his rose garden. He delighted in travelling to Europe on many trips, though in recent years he found his greatest joy at Lake Norman. Above all, Jim loved his family and his dogs.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Johnnie Sue Ross; and a brother, Robert Marshall Ross.
