JOHNSON CITY - Jack Louw, of Johnson City, TN previously of Pretoria, South Africa, passed away on April 15, 2024, following his courageous battle with cancer. We are grieving the loss of our dear husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend, and a valued member of the community.

Jack was born in Wellington, Cape Province, South Africa, where he grew up with his older brother surrounded by the Cape winelands and majestic mountains. He completed his schooling in Wellington, where he was an excellent and dedicated student, which won him many prizes and awards from Hugenote High School.

Jack earned his Civil Engineering degree from the University of Pretoria and received the Excellence Award for Best Research Project in his class. He obtained an MBL degree from the University of South Africa. Jack was registered as a Professional Engineer and was a Senior Member of the Association of Business Management in South Africa. He started his career as a civil engineer at BKS Consulting Engineers, SA, as the design engineer for various projects such as bridges, schools, and buildings. Later he served as project and design manager of nationwide defense installations and national sport stadiums. As a company director he was entrusted with marketing, overseeing, and coordinating projects and general office management. Jack was also an adjunct professor at the University of Pretoria in structural engineering. He joined Namib Management Services, an international milling company, as a director, before retiring. Jack served as volunteer on various community committees in Pretoria, South Africa. After relocating to Johnson City in 2009, he served on the Johnson City Regional Planning Commission.

Jack was an accomplished all-rounder. He was a stellar squash player on provincial level. His many hobbies included knife making, creating exceptional pieces of furniture and he was a wine connoisseur. He took great pleasure and interest in good food and enjoyed cooking, bread baking and was knowledgeable about international cuisine. He had a keen interest in architecture and design in different countries. Jack appreciated nature and set store by creating a beautiful environment. He was well read, conversant about world affairs and was a fountain of knowledge on an incredible number of fields, with particular keen insight into financial matters and the stock market. He enjoyed music with an eclectic music taste from opera, classical music to hard rock! He relished his extensive travels around the globe. Jack was an avid sports fan ranging from soccer to tennis. He took pleasure in family, friends and young individuals and sharing his passions, experiences, and knowledge with them. Jack was known for his strength of character, determination, and loyalty.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents and brother. He is survived by his wife Brenda, their son Justin, daughter-in-law Tiffany, and grandson Julien Jax, nephew Brendon Loxton of Durham, NC and sister-in-law, cousins and nephews in South Africa and Namibia.

Everyone who had the privilege to meet and get to know Jack will continue to keep him in their memory and remember his valuable pieces of advice, and his positive spirit.

A Celebration of Life in honor of Jack Louw will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City at 11 am with Chaplain Jeffrey Hammer officiating.
