Helen Grindstaff Obituary

Helen "Dixie" Snapp Grindstaff

June 4, 2025

Helen "Dixie" Snapp Grindstaff passed away peacefully at home on the morning of Wednesday, June 4.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Wendell Snapp and May Belle Humphrey Snapp; her siblings Margaret Ann Snapp, James Snapp, Henry Snapp, Flo Snapp Forbes, Thad Snapp, and PC Snapp.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 60 years, Charles "Mike" Grindstaff; her children, Lora Grindstaff Clark, Rachel Grindstaff, John Grindstaff (Marsha), and Helen Glasheen (Brandon); her nieces Ava Forbes, and Lisa Forbes. She was a beloved grandmother to Seth, Gavin, and Katrina Clark; Hampton Grindstaff; Victoria Forbes; and Ivey Glasheen, and a proud great-grandmother to River Clark.

Dixie graduated from Science Hill High School in 1960 and East Tennessee State University in 1964. She began her teaching career at Gray Elementary and later returned to education after raising her family, working as a substitute teacher and then as a teacher's aide at Henry Johnson, Woodland, and Cherokee Elementary Schools in the Johnson City school system.

A lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, she was deeply involved in the church community, especially enjoying choir tours with the youth group. Civically engaged, she helped work on establishing the Washington County 911 system and volunteered on several political campaigns, including those of her brother PC Snapp and other community leaders.

Dixie will be remembered for her dedication to her family, her commitment to education and community, and her steadfast faith in God.

The Grindstaff family will receive friends from 1:30 – 3:00 PM Sunday June 8, 2025 at First Presbyterian Church of Johnson City, and a funeral will follow at 3:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church of Johnson City. Service will be officiated by Reverend Paul Helphinstine.
