Harry Fleenor Obituary

Rev. Harry Wayne Fleenor

June 26, 1933 -

October 9, 2024

JOHNSON CITY - The Rev. Harry Wayne Fleenor, age 91, of Johnson City, formerly of Rogersville, Tn passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 9, 2024. Born in Sullivan County, Tn on June 26, 1933, Harry was the son of Squire Jacob Brown and Mary Kate Netherland Fleenor. Jacob was a local merchant and Justice of the Peace who swore in the first Board of Mayor and Alderman for the City of Kingsport. He resided in Hillcrest of Memorial Blvd in early life, graduated from Blountville High and became a pipefitter for Eastman.

Answering a call to ministry, Harry served United Methodist churches across east Tennessee and southwest Virginia from 1962 to 2002 and was still active in retirement. He attended East Tennessee State as well as the Course of Studies at Duke Divinity School. It was an honor to serve in the ministry alongside his brothers, Rye and Worley, nephews, Mike Fleenor and Andrew Glover, brother-in-law Roger Soloman and son, Mark.

Rev. Fleenor had many hobbies throughout his life. An accomplished baseball player at Blountville, he would later go on to coach little league, and avid horseman, stamp and coin collector, sports fan always pulling for the underdog, golfer, heavy equipment owner and operator, craftsman, and was well known at many auctions as he enjoyed his booths at antique outlets. Many days and night were spent supporting his children in band and sporting events.

The youngest of fourteen siblings, Harry is preceded in death by four sisters, nine brothers and his wife Peggy, formerly of Rogersville. His first brother, Willie, was born in 1897, thus ending this 12-year line of siblings. He is survived by his children; David and wife Carol of Glade Spring, VA; Cynthia of Limestone, Jeffery and wife Lisa of Johnson City, and Mark of Johnson City. There are twenty-four grandchildren and great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends at East Lawn Funeral Home from 12 to 2:00 PM on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024 with the service and burial to follow. The Rev. Justin Keating and Rev. Greg Fletcher will preside.

Pallbearers will be grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff of Abundant Christian Living in Johnson City for their excellent and compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate to Abundant Christian Living, 2012 Sherwood Drive, Johnson City, 37601, or to Rogersville United Methodist Church Missions, 110 Colonial Rd. Rogersville, Tn 37857.

It is with sadness that we express condolences from Cross UMC. Harry's quick wit was
a delight to the congregation. His calling was to inspire and move hearers to praise God. His dedication to the Lord is imprinted on our hearts.

Mark, I offer my deepest sympathy to you and your family with the death of your father. I was already married and "out of the house" when your father served at Pleasant Grove. My mother, Annie Bradford, seemed to take you all into her arms. Then I ran into you again at Munsey, and you were the only minister in contact with the family when she passed. Now, may your father rest in peace after a job well-done here on earth.
