Richard Whetzel Obituary

Richard Whetzel, known affectionately as Ricky, of Erie, Pennsylvania, passed away on September 19, 2025, at the age of 65. He was born on August 15, 1960, in Wheeling, West Virginia, and spent much of his life in New Castle and Sharon, Pennsylvania.

Ricky was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Le’Janae Rickel Whetzel, his mother Betty Simmons, and his brother Douglas Whetzel.

He is survived by his cherished grandchildren, A’Jennae Markel Tolbert and Keivon Richard Reddix, as well as Jennifer Tolbert Evans, the mother of Le’Janae, all of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by his sister, Portia (Michael) Easter of Newport News, Virginia, and their children, Bethany and Jordan; his niece, Juanicia Mosby; and his great-nephew, Tyree Mosby.

Ricky was a talented athlete in his youth, excelling in both junior high and high school. He played baseball, competed on the 4x4 hurdle team, and was a skilled long jumper. His competitive spirit carried over into his love of life—he was always ready for fun, laughter, and time with friends and family.

He leaves behind many who will forever treasure his memory, including lifelong friends Maurice “Moe” Goodwin and Pat Jones.

A memorial service will be held in Wheeling, West Virginia, with details to be announced at a later date.
