Greg was one of a kind and will be greatly missed. When I first met him he just started up a conversation, as if we had always known each other. And I feel confident that was his way with everyone. Whenever Jerry was playing anywhere all he had to do was pick up the phone and call Greg with whatever problem and Greg would be there in little time. I always enjoyed seeing his latest electronic gadget discovery, which he would demonstrate with pride. I will have the family in my prayers.

So sorry to know this. Carl Cates helped me in so many ways growing up as a musician. Later Greg and Jeff both became good friends of mine in their music store. Prayers for family ...

Our deepest condolences to the family. I wanted to share this photo of Greg with you. This was our "motley crew" back in the 1980´s. We were proud to call him our friend!

I knew both Greg and his brother Jeff fairly well when we were in high school together. Several times over the years I intended to stop by the music store when I was in town but never seemed to have the time for it. I seriously regret that. My sincerest condolences to their mother and their families. - Bill Hunt, Cincinnati OH.

I want to share my thoughts about a dear friend who has passed: Greggory Howard Cates. There are certain people we meet in life who possess a talent that leaves an indelible mark on us. It might be the way they tell a story, repair something broken, or approach challenges with wisdom and grace. Greg was one of those rare souls.
I was always in awe of how he made the best of any situation. When you shared a concern with Greg, it became his concern too. In those moments, you knew you weren´t alone. He had a way of shifting your perspective, revealing a new path forward. Greg could be your prince riding to the rescue or a sage offering practical solutions. Either way, you knew you had his full attention and unwavering care. This ability to truly listen and connect was his gift-and he gave it freely.
I first met Greg on Walker Street, in Barry Ward´s driveway. His brother Jeff drove us to Elizabethton High School in a white square-back Volkswagen with a modified engine, an aftermarket stereo, and a CB radio. That car was a reflection of the Cates brothers´ passion for making life bigger, better, and more exciting. That was 1976, and for the next 48 years, Greg never stopped moving the needle-on cars, on conversations, and on the lives of those lucky enough to know him.
With Greg´s passing, we´ve lost a truly caring and dynamic soul. His absence will be deeply felt, but it´s now up to us to carry his spirit forward. Let´s strive to be the prince, the sage, the listener, and the encourager that Greg was to so many. Let´s live fully, as he did, and honor his memory by mirroring the kindness and wisdom he shared with the world.
This cycle of life and death is natural, but when we miss our friend, let´s remember the unique talents he brought to us-and bring them forward in his name. Rest in peace, Greg. You will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
