Dr. Gloria Ruth Gammell September 9, 1952- March 25, 2024
JOHNSON CITY - It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved "G" from respiratory arrest. Dr. Gloria Ruth Gammell, born on September 9, 1952, in Cincinnati, Ohio, made her way to the Great Gig in the Sky on March 25, 2024, at the age of 71 in Johnson City, Tennessee.
She is survived by her spouse and soulmate, Dr. Susan MacNeill Grover and leaves behind an eternal legacy of love and joy that will forever be honored by all who knew her, and as a cherished mother to her three sons, Zach (Megan) Mural, Richard (Amy) Grover, Eric (Martha Cate) Grover and her daughter, Christina (Reggie) Raman; her brother, Glenn (Kenda) Gammell. She was preceded in death by her parents, Norma Ruth and Harry C. Gammell.
Gloria had eleven grandchildren: Zach's: Molly, Ellie, and Caleb; Christina's: Isabella and Rowan; Rich's: Madison, Ava, and Christian; Eric's: Charley, Avery, and Luke.
Gloria attended EKU (BA, MA), Eastern Michigan University (MA) and Vanderbilt with her EdD. Gloria retired in 2019 as Director of Special Statewide Initiatives at UT. Before that, she was an adjunct faculty at ETSU, Evening College Director at Virginia Intermont and Director of CHIPS. Her retirement hobby was camping with friends and upgrading her camper.
Gloria was the epitome of living life to the fullest. She embraced every moment with an infectious joy that touched all those around her. Her love for nature led her on countless camping trips and RV adventures with Susan and their tight tribe of friends whom she called her "chosen family".
Gloria's life was filled with an unwavering passion for Mother Earth and a sense of humor that could brighten even the darkest days. While a beer snob, her love for Scotch and Bourbon was only surpassed by her love for travel and adventure. Gloria's life was defined by her kindness and compassion for all living beings. Her love for animals was evident in her deep bond with her sweet rescue dog Shelby. Gloria rescued Shelby off the side of the road in North Carolina and from that moment on, they were inseparable.
The family would like to extend a thank you to the staff on 2600 at JCMC, especially Chrissy. Condolences may be shared by visiting www.neptunesociety.com.
Gloria's passing has left an unfillable void in the hearts of those who knew her. A Celebration of Life to honor Gloria will be held at a later time.
