JOHNSON CITY - George R. Norton, 82, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2025, at his home on Liberty Bell Blvd in Johnson City, TN, leaving behind a legacy filled with dedication, joy, and the love of a close-knit family. Born on February 15, 1943, in Newport, TN, to the late Manley and Alice Norton, he grew up alongside his brothers Ronnie, Tommy, and the late Ray Norton, surrounded by the unique charm of their Tennessee home.
George's journey of life was marked by a fervent commitment to his family, country, and community. After graduating from Daniel Boone High School and Steed College, George went on to honorably serve his country in the Army, where he embodied the values of discipline and integrity. Upon his discharge, he began a distinguished career, working diligently at Holston Defense, Eastman, and later enjoying his time at Holiday Lanes, where he was not just an employee but a part of a larger family of coworkers and bowlers.
He was of the Baptist faith, where his beliefs guided him throughout his life. His keen interest in bowling led him to become a valued member of the Johnson City Bowling Association, where he formed lasting friendships and made significant contributions to the sport. Additionally, his dedication to youth and sports led him to serve with the Tenn State Youth Association, extending his influence and kindness to the younger generation.
Digital worlds and the evolution of technology captivated George, who enjoyed exploring the realms of computers. This hobby not only kept him connected to the fast-paced advancements of the age but also provided countless hours of joy and discovery.
The epitome of a family man, George cherished moments spent with his family. George walked through life with his late beloved wife, Barbara, in shared strides of love and companionship, and her memory remained a guiding star for him even after her passing. He was a beacon of love and strength for his three sons, Robert (Jennifer), Steven (Misty), and Jason Norton (Kelly). The joys of grandparenthood were many when he was surrounded by his grandchildren, Patrick, Braydon, and Laura Norton, along with Mikayla Miller and Sierra Hanson. The blessing of his great-granddaughter Raeliana Brock added even more happiness to his abundant life. George's tenderness and care extended to his numerous nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in his heart.
