JOHNSON CITY - Gary Wayne Gilley, 79 of Johnson City went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, November 2, 2023 at his residence with his family by his side. He was a native of and lifelong resident of Washington County and was a son of the late Luther and Minnie Grindstaff Gilley. Gary had worked as a truck driver for many years, retiring from I.J. Foods. He was a longtime member of Rich Acres Freewill Baptist Church where he had served as choir leader for over 30 years. Gary loved his family and his church family very much. He enjoyed going to Church, watching Atlanta Braves games and cheering on the Tennessee Vols. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Rice and two brothers, Larry Gilley and David Gilley.
Survivors include his loving wife, Patricia Branscom Gilley; four daughters, Karen Boling and husband, Dave of Bristol, Tammy Dunavent and husband, Shayne, Robin Freeman and husband, Brian all of Johnson City and Phyllis Moore and husband, Kevin of Maryland; a son, Wayne Gilley of Maryland; a brother, Keith Gilley and Richard Lukens of Maine; three special grandchildren, Howie Hale, Logan Gilley and Makayla Freeman; grandchildren, Amber Moore, Brandon Moore, Devon Gilley and Isabele Gilley; three special cousins, Mary Sue Miller, Debbie Giles and Lois Rogers; also several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Gary will be conducted at 2:00 PM Monday, November 6, 2023 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with Pastor Kenneth Grindstaff and Pastor Brett Jones officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:30 PM until the service hour. Graveside services will follow in the Washington County Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
The family would like to give special thanks to the Amedisys Hospice Group for the wonderful, loving care they provided during Gary's illness.
