Fredrick "Fred" William Hahn, age 66, of Eau Claire passed away on Tuesday, April 15 at Marshfield Medical Center in Eau Claire after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born March 16, 1959, to the late Harvey H. Hahn and Mary A. Wagner (née Ross), he was baptized May 9, 1959, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Eau Claire. Fred grew up in the rural area of Eau Claire in the town of Brunswick.
His youth was spent helping out at neighboring farms and exploring the countryside where his lifelong interest and uncanny ability to fix anything with a motor, from farm tractors to end loaders, began. He was a graduate of Memorial High School and attended Chippewa Valley Technical College receiving a technical diploma as a diesel technician. During his later youth and early married years, he volunteered for the fire departments of Washington and Brunswick townships.
He had a strong work ethic, starting his work career at Wagner's 66½ Lanes during high school as head mechanic and maintenance man. It was there that he met his future wife, Debra "Debbie" Schneider. Married in January of 1984, the couple combined work and honeymoon by stopping at a closed, unheated bowling alley along their way to tear out bowling machines dressed in winter attire and having the crew share their good wishes and lunch sandwiches with them.
When the family grew, Fred left Wagner's to be a stay-at-home dad to his two young daughters while operating a small engine business out of the garage. He regularly volunteered at their elementary school to the delight of the teachers and staff, and he always made time for outings with the children around Eau Claire.
Fred found pleasure working outdoors and was later employed by the Town of Washington as Sexton and groundskeeper at Rest Haven Cemetery. As an active member at Concordia Lutheran Church, he served as trustee and enjoyed mowing the church property for many years. Later, he worked at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and School in maintenance where he liked working with the staff and students until health forced his "retirement." As time and health allowed, he kept busy with his yard or house projects and when possible, with others' projects.
He is survived by his wife, Debbie; daughters, Jennifer "Jenny" (Matthew) Jasper and Katherine "Katie" Hahn; grandchildren, Alayna and Emmett; sisters, Luci (William) Gorell and Amy Hahn; other family members and friends. Fred was preceded in death by his half-brother, Richard Root.
Funeral Service will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23 at Concordia Lutheran Church (3715 London Road, Eau Claire). Visitation will be from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at church on Wednesday.
It was Fred's request for casual attire. Interment will be in Rest Haven Cemetery in the Town of Washington, Wisconsin. Evergreen Funeral Home is serving the family.
