Earl Yates Obituary

Earl "The Pearl" Yates

October 27, 2024

Earl "The Pearl" completed his earthly life October 27, 2024, at the ripe age of 90. As he would say, he was a legend in his own mind. Earl loved sports, specifically UT sports. He loved to play a good game of basketball, putting in many hours at Kiwanis Park. He didn't give it up until he was into his 70s. He was very competitive at ping pong as well, participating at the Johnson City Senior Center.

In addition to his parents, Rosie and Clifton Yates, Earl was preceded in death by his 6 brothers and sisters, Clarence Yates, Hazel Landers, Robert Yates, Hubert Yates, Ruby O'Dell, and Elsie Riley. Earl is survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family is in the process of planning a memorial service to be held at Kiwanis Park. Details are incomplete at this time.

Memories and condolences may be shared with the family via www.morrisbaker.com.

Only knew Earl for a few years in his later life, but enjoy spending the time with him met him at ping-pong and he and I actually won a doubles ping-pong tournament. He was a good friend and he will be missed.

Earl was well educated both by traditional means and by self education. He continued his lifelong learning by often reading up to five newspapers a day. Earl was open-minded while considering differing perspectives and points of view. He enjoyed music as well as sports, listening to everything from Country to concerts at ETSU. He is one of those special friends who David and I have always loved, respected, and enjoyed knowing.
