ELIZABETHTON - David Scott Hecht, 53, died from cancer on June 13th, 2023, at his residence in Elizabethton, TN
Dave was born in Union, New Jersey on May 3rd, 1970. He was a loving husband to his wife, Rachel, who was always impressed with his constant ability to evolve and grow as a person, bonding the family with his love and leadership. He was a fiercely devoted father to his daughters, Emma Catherine and Caroline Elizabeth. His mother, the late Arlene Hecht, instilled in him the value of his Italian heritage, and Dave enjoyed carrying on family traditions, which mostly revolved around food. Friends and family will remember his legendary Sunday pasta and meatballs as well as The Feast of the Seven Fishes every Christmas. He will be greatly missed by his father, Joseph Hecht, who was always very proud of Dave and his achievements. "Uncle Dave" is also survived by his brother, Michael Hecht, sister-in-law, Terri Hecht, and their children Christopher and Ellie Hecht, as well as nieces Cristina and Cathleen McAllister, and nephews Hiram and Theodore Young. He is also survived by his dogs and grand dogs: Ranger, Roux, Captain, Spaceman and Jax.
He was an enthusiastic sports dad who never missed an opportunity to support and challenge his daughters in their competitions. His love for dogs brought over 10 dogs into the home over the course of 26 years of marriage. Inky, his rescued English Springer Spaniel, was his favorite dog by far, and is waiting (along with five others) at Rainbow Bridge. He also loved cars and is survived by family car number 22. While he loved all animals, it was truly an honor to be counted among his human friends. Dave was loyal to a fault and would give you the shirt off his back, just not during a Manchester
City match or if a UVA game was on the TV.
Dave was a graduate of Cranford High School in New Jersey. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville in 1992, and continued to the University of Medicine
and Dentistry of New Jersey, graduating in 1996. He completed his residency in
surgery at the University of Florida Jacksonville in 2001. In 2009, he completed the Physician
Executive MBA Program at the University of Tennessee.
Dave began his career as a general surgeon in Elizabethton before joining the Mountain Home V.A. in 2008. He served with distinction and retired as the chief of staff in 2022. Dave was a
compassionate and dedicated surgeon who cared deeply for his patients. He found his true
calling at the V.A. where he loved working with his colleagues to serve our veterans.
In lieu of food or flowers, the family respectfully asks for donations to be made to English Springer Rescue America (ESRA) or another animal rescue charity in Dave's memory. Though he lived in many places, Dave was a New Orleanian at heart; he can be honored by any toasting, overeating, or second line dancing in his name.

Rachel, Emma, and Caroline, there are no words to make anything feel better. It has been a pleasure to know Dave and the 3 of you! If there is anything I can do for you, please reach out and it will be done! When we lost Jarrods dad in 21, the only comforting feeling we had was our close community around us. I will cheers to Dave by eating my pasta, loving on my pups, and driving my car a little too fast. Love you girls!

He was my physician through breast cancer. Told me later I would see it as a bump in the road. Twenty years later and I´ve survived. I was so sad to hear of his illness and passing. With sincere prayers I send to his family and grateful for the care I received from him and Jamie. Elizabethton lost a great physician. Patti Mosley

I am so very sorry for your loss. I first met Dr. Hecht when I began working at Sycamore Shoals Hospital in 2004. Dr. Hecht was always a pleasure to work with in the operating room. His sense of humor was always refreshing during a difficult procedure and was always considerate of the staff as well. I always enjoyed hearing stories about his Rhodesian Ridgeback dog´s antics and his girls high spirited personalities. He will be sorely missed by many.

Rachel, Emma, and Caroline, Dave is sorely missed and we grieve for your loss. He was courteous and kind to us when visiting in California. We enjoyed his quiet but sharp wit, and his devotion to and pride in his family were always readily apparent. We never failed to think of Dave while living at the coast and seeing all the exotic cars making the trek up Highway 1 to Monterey. We have prayed for your family all these months and will continue to do so. We will also give our English Springer and extra hug in his honor. Much Love, Aunt Jo and Uncle Russ

Rachel. I can still remember the day that dr Martin and myself were roaming the halls of that hospital in Florida and we decided to try to find as a nice young surgeon for our hospital in elizabethton. We talked to young Dave Hecht and he was crazy enough to listen. The rest is history. He not only brought his family but several good friends as well and all very good people. I feel like each one of you were meant to come here. I have always been proud of you both for your work in our community. You two have always been so motivated in you careers and in helping others. Good job Dave Hecht and Rachel and thanks for your help with my family and our community. We love.you Charles hollowell
