JOHNSON CITY - Claude A. Luttrell "Papaw", 84, of Johnson City, passed away unexpectedly yet peacefully Sunday, October 15, 2023. He went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, while in the comfort of his home.
Claude was born in Jonesborough but lived most of his life with his wife of 63 years, Jenell Luttrell, in Johnson City, TN.
He attended Jonesborough High School and transitioned into working at Rainbow Bakery in his early twenties. Shortly after starting work with Rainbow, he met his wife, Jenell. After marriage, Claude's career took them to Abingdon, VA then Dallas, TX. While in Dallas, he purchased a Pepperidge Farm franchise, moved his wife and three daughters back to Johnson City, and introduced Pepperidge Farm to this area for the first time. He then met his goal at age 48 to retire from his Pepperidge Farm bread route, purchased Landmark Shopping Center which he owned for 37 years, and owned and managed multiple other commercial and residential properties.
Claude was a self-made man and entrepreneur that accomplished much in his life, but his greatest accomplishment was the way he loved and provided for his family.
Claude was a faithful member of Mountain View Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, sang in the choir for many years, and was very involved in Pastor Cambron's adult Sunday school class.
In addition to his parents (Frank and Lucy Luttrell), Claude was preceded in death by four brothers, Ralph, Paul, Leroy and Ancil; four sisters, Opal McGee, Madelyn Neal, Martha Leonard, and Gene Chapman.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-three years, Jenell Luttrell; three daughters, Ada Luttrell, Claudene Luttrell, and Sandy Greenwell; three grandchildren, Haley Leach and her husband Tanner, Alison Johnson and her husband Wes, and Joseph Greenwell; six great-grandchildren, Asaph Leach, Korah Leach, Josie Johnson, Hayden Johnson, Nola and Crosby Greenwell (as well as their mom- Elizabeth Greenwell); several nieces and nephews.
The family of Claude Luttrell will receive friends from 12 to 1 PM Thursday, October 19, 2023, at Tetrick Funeral Services in Johnson City, TN. The funeral service will follow at 1 PM with Pastor Rich Murray officiating. A graveside service will follow at 2PM, at Washington County Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Tanner Leach, Eddie Owens, Galen Freeman, Jim Davis, Jack Pitts, and Larry Taylor. Honorary pallbearers will be Dewayne Hayes, Jim Hankle, and the deacons of Mountain View Baptist Church.
The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that memorial contributions be made to Mountain View Baptist Church located at 150 Champions Ln, Johnson City, TN 37601.
