JOHNSON CITY - Catherine Silvers Grooms, 94, Johnson City, went to be with her Lord and Savior, on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at Lakebridge Health Care Center, following a lengthy illness.

Catherine was born and raised in Buncombe County, NC, and had been a resident of Johnson City for the past sixty years. She was a daughter of the late John William and Julia Mae Shepherd Silvers.

Catherine attended Weaverville primary and high schools. She completed her LPN training at St. Joseph Hospital, Asheville, and later attended Walter State Community College.

Catherine worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse for forty-two years at the former Johnson City Memorial Hospital and then the Johnson City Medical Center.

She was a Christian since childhood and a longtime member of University Parkway Baptist Church.

Catherine loved her family, gardening, reading, art and especially playing with her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Van, Willie Jay, Ernest and John Robert Silvers, two sisters, Verlin Silvers and Obera Ray, twin infant siblings, and two nephews, Charles Silvers, Johnny Ray and his wife Brenda.

Catherine is survived by two children, Larry Wayne Grooms and wife Wanda, Jonesborough, Julie Grooms Powell and husband Terry, Johnson City; four grandchildren, Christie Arnold and husband Richard, Richlands, NC, Miranda Arredondo and husband Hector, Rowlett, TX, Zach Grooms and wife Tere, Branson, MO, Ashley Echevarria and husband Andrik, Asheville, NC; six great-grandchildren, Evie and Ricky Arnold, Leo and Juliette Arredondo, Zoe Echevarria, and Zach Grooms; two nephews, Tommy and Mike Ray, one niece, Sharon Forehand.

The funeral service for Catherine will be conducted Sunday, April 6, 2025, at 3:00 P.M. from the Sanctuary of University Parkway Baptist Church, with Pastor Scott Thompson, officiating. Special music will be provided by Kathy Thompson.

The family will receive friends Sunday prior to the service from 2:00 – 3:00 P.M. at the church.

The graveside committal service will be held on Monday, April 7, 2025, at 2:00 P.M. in West Memorial Park, 40 Roberts St., Weaverville, NC 28787. Pallbearers will be Larry Grooms, Terry Powell, Tommy Ray, Mike Ray, Andrik Echevarria, Richard Arnold and Jerry Pond. Those planning to attend are to meet at the cemetery.
