Burl Mast Obituary

Burl Smith Mast

May 9, 1938 -

September 29, 2024

ELIZABETHTON - Burl Smith Mast, 86, Elizabethton passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 29th, at 11:02 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Hospital, in the company of family.

Born on May 9th, 1938, Burl lived a life of dedication and service-to his country, his family, and his community.

After graduating from Unicoi County High School, Burl joined the Army at the age of 17, embarking on a 20-year journey of service to his country. Rising to the rank of Sergeant Major, he served with honor through tours in Vietnam and Korea, and across the United States. The values instilled in him during those years defined much of his life-discipline, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to others.

After his military career, Burl continued to serve others by teaching auto mechanics at a vocational school and later serving as the water commissioner in Unicoi County. He also started a small engine repair business in a shop built on his property.

Burl had a deep love for bluegrass and country music, and he made it a part of the community's heartbeat by hosting free weekly music jam sessions at the locally famous Red Barn which had evolved from auto body shop to cherished music venue. He played the banjo and sang in his band, the Red Barn Band, bringing people together with the joy of music.

Burl is preceded in death by his beloved son, Burl "Sonny" Mast. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jean Mast, who stood by his side through every triumph and challenge. He leaves behind his daughter, Connie Adkins, his daughter-in-law, Lisa Mast, his son-in-law Ron Adkins, his four grandsons-Mathew and Joshuah Kyker, and Justin and Mitchel Mast-his cherished great-grandchildren, and the many who considered him honorary uncle. Each of them carries with them a piece of his legacy: the memory of his stories, the echo of his laughter, and the lessons of a life well-lived.

Burl was hardworking, meticulous, and witty. He had a sharp mind for details and a storyteller's heart. Whether he was fishing, traveling, or simply sitting with a banjo in hand, Burl brought warmth and light to those around him. Even in his later years, he remained committed to service-never ceasing to care for his wife and his family.

A memorial service to celebrate Burl's life will be held at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Elizabethton on Monday, October 7th, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to local flood relief efforts.

Burl Smith Mast was a man defined by service-service to his country, to his community, to his passions, and to those he loved. His legacy is one of devotion, generosity, and music. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered, a presence that lingers in every story told, every note played, and every life he touched.
