Bobbie Edna Street Kitchens passed away on Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at the age of 91 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital surrounded by her children and other loving family. She was the beloved widow of Oscar Davis Kitchens and had shared 56 years of marriage.
Born in Roan Mountain, Tennessee, May 6, 1932, she was the daughter of the late J.W. Street and Ruth Forbes Street, and sister of the late Frances Street Bolton. She graduated from Cloudland High School then met the love of her life, Oscar, while she was in nursing school in Banner Elk, North Carolina. They were married there on December 21, 1950.
After obtaining her nursing degree, they moved back to Elizabethton, where she was a nurse at the old Franklin Clinic, Saint Elizabeth Hospital (now Ivy Hall Nursing Home) and Carter County Memorial Hospital. She also spent several years as a private duty nurse, before starting to work with her dad, J.W. Street, in the Carter County Highway Department as his receptionist and secretary. She and Oscar also worked in real estate with her brother, Jimmy Street.
She leaves behind to honor her wonderful memory, daughter, Jessie Gail Kitchens Cook and son-in-law Dennis; son, Jerome Dale Kitchens and Anne Kitchens; son, Terry Lynn Kitchens and daughter-in-law, Janice Kitchens; daughter, Tammy Lee Kitchens Blevins and son-in-law, Terry Blevins; eleven grandchildren: Joy Cook, Keith Cook and Laura, Jaime Kitchens, Megan Cook Nelson and Keith Nelson, Michael Cook, Kiera LaFalce, Travis Bowman and Jehan Bowman, Robert Kitchens, Karin Kitchens McHugh and Steve McHugh, Reanna Jones and Toby Jones, and Katie Kitchens; ten great-grandchildren: Rhapsody Cook, Aiden Bowman, Blake Bowman, Adrionna Jones, Riley Jones, Ryan Jones, Oscar Nelson, Arlo Nelson Colin McHugh, and Madelyn McHugh; one great-great-grandson, Atlas Cook; and three brothers, J.W. Street, Jr., Jimmy D. Street and Mary Lou, and Ronnie G. Street. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to celebrate the life of Bobbie Edna Street Kitchens will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 23, 2023 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton with Pastor Tim Ross officiating. Special music will be under the direction of Loretta Bowers. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel prior to the service on Saturday.
The graveside service will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Travis Bowman, Michael Cook, Robert Kitchens, Toby Jones, David Bass, Stacy Street, Steve McHugh and Blake Bowman.
