JOHNSON CITY - Bill Stewart, 91, of Johnson City, Tennessee, died on October 30, 2023, at Abundant Christian Living Community.
A fifty-year resident of Johnson City, Bill was well-known in the business and civic communities. He was a partner at Parker Stewart Shorter & Carden, a local accounting firm. For many years, he served as a board member for the Dawn of Hope, the Johnson City Housing Authority, and numerous United Way campaigns. Bill and his late wife Louanna were also members of the Virgil Anderson Sunday school class at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. However, Bill was best known in the community as an ace golfer. His home course was the Johnson City Country Club, where he won numerous tournaments during the fifty years he played there. He also had eight holes-in-one: the first in 2002 at the age of seventy and the latest in 2020 at the age of eighty-eight.
The devoted and loving husband of Louanna Stewart, Bill was the father of two sons, Edward Burton, and Charles Clay Stewart. Born in Big Stone Gap, VA to Beulah Giles and James Jesse Stewart, Bill grew up with three brothers-Carl, Ted, and Jimmy. Despite a wide range in ages the Stewart boys were a tight clan.
Bill graduated from Coeburn High School in Coeburn, VA, where he lettered in several sports. He attended Hiwassee College in Madisonville, TN on a basketball scholarship for a year until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy to serve in the Korean conflict; he had duty in Korea, Japan, and the South Pacific. Upon discharge, Bill finished his bachelor's degree at Union College in Barbourville, KY where he met Louanna Burton. They married a few days after college graduation and moved to Florida where Bill was with the Internal Revenue Service. He later joined Price Waterhouse's Miami office as an accountant before settling in Johnson City.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife Louanna.
Survivors include: his sons Edward and daughter-in-law Shelley of Arlington, VA, Charles and daughter-in-law Lori of Louisville, TN; grandchildren, Margaret Stewart of Washington, DC, William Stewart of New York, NY, Matthew and Anna Stewart of Louisville, TN; step-grandchildren, T.J. Wingo of Birmingham, AL and Lindsey Wingo Headrick of Maryville, TN; sister-in-law, Betty Jo Stewart of Wise, VA, and numerous friends and colleagues within the business, charitable, church, and golf communities.
A funeral service for Bill Stewart will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, December 3,2023 at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson City, TN, immediately followed by a visitation reception at the church. A graveside committal service, with military honors will be held at Mountain Home National Cemetery at 10:00 AM on Monday, December 4, 2023. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 9:50 AM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bill Stewart's name to the Pastor's Discretionary Fund at Munsey Memorial UMC.
