LIMESTONE - Mr. Archie James Jones, age 88, Limestone, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, June 22, 2023.
Mr. Jones was born March 17, 1935, in Yancey County, North Carolina, to the late Columbus & Elizabeth Bennett Jones. He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 70 years, B. Jewell Estepp Jones, an infant child, sister, Mae Byrd of Johnson City and a young brother Hubert Jones of North Carolina.
Having accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior, he was faithful to Limestone Free Will Baptist Church. He attended services in the church parking lot to listen in his truck during the Covid-19 pandemic and attended services as long as his health permitted. He was also known among family and friends as a faithful visitor to those who needed visits or phone calls.
Archie lived most of his life in Johnson City and Limestone. Twice retired, Archie went to work at a young age at Royal Oil Company, Johnson City and later was employed by Stafford Custom Graphics, Jonesborough. Providing for his family was always important to Archie and he was honored by his employers for his loyalty and faithfulness.
Among his camping family, Archie was known as the campfire builder and the bicycle man, earning a shirt for proclaiming the latter. He was also known for keeping a manicured lawn and a few days before his death was tending his roses. Tending his apple trees and sharing the fruits of his labor in his garden were his pleasures.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie & Dwight Mitchell, Limestone; and a grand dog, "Casey"; sisters, Lucues Copeland Brunswick, Georgia and Madlyn Lewis, Johnson City; brother, Hobert Jones, Johnson City; and several nephews and nieces.
