Allen T. Johnson

He was born June 17, 1931, and was the youngest child of Flora and Allen T. Johnson, Sr. He grew up in North Tazewell, VA, and attended Tazewell High School.

After graduating, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he was a Staff Sergeant stationed in Europe as part of the 12th Air Force Command and 1st Radio Relay Squadron. He spent three years overseas before returning to Tazewell and marrying Betty Jean McFarland in May of 1954.

He attended Bluefield College and served as a staff accountant for the Fred P. Edwards Co. CPA firm in Bluefield, WV, following graduation. Upon moving to Bristol in the early 1960s, he accepted a job with Marcoin Business Services doing bookkeeping and tax preparation for many small businesses in the Tri-Cities and Western North Carolina areas. He also worked as an Enrolled Agent with the IRS before ultimately retiring from E.K. Williams and Co. in the early 1990s.

When not working, Allen enjoyed woodworking, traveling, and spending time with family. He was also an active member of Beech Grove United Methodist Church for many years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sisters (Virginia Hughes and Irene Johnson), wife (Betty), and son (Tom).

Survivors include his two granddaughters (Bethann and Sarakay), their mother (Luann), beloved in-laws (Nancy Witt, Barbara Hinton, and Bill McFarland), and several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Brookdale Bristol, NHC Bristol, and Caris Hospice for their devoted care of Allen.

A service honoring the life of Allen Johnson will be conducted in the Glenwood Mausoleum on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at 2:30 p.m. with Minister Herb Peak officiating. Military honors will be rendered by DAV Chapter 39 Honor Guard and the Shaw Air Force Base Honor Guard. The family will receive friends form 1 – 2 p.m. at Weaver Funeral Home. Allen requested no flowers and that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or The Salvation Army, 137 Martin Luther King Blvd, Bristol, TN 37620.
