Harold Kapelan, 87, of Scranton, died peacefully Friday morning, July 5 at Smith Health Care Ltd., Mountain Top.
Born on April 7, 1937, in Scranton, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Anna Smakula Kapelanovich and was a graduate of West Scranton High School, class of 1955. Soon after graduation, Harold started working for Sunoco in Marcus Hook, and he spent some time in the Suez Canal. After apprenticing with Gardner Plumbing in 1959, he became a member of Local 524 Pipefitters and Plumbers Union and was a proud plumber in the building trades industry, utilizing his skills to improve countless homes and businesses throughout the area. His commitment to his craft was unmatched, and his work ethic an inspiration to many. In 1960, he enlisted to serve our country with the United States Army Reserves. For many years, Harold was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Russian Orthodox Church, Scranton. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and was lovingly known as Tiger, Tiger Pop, Gravey and Whitey, and they were a big part of his life and brought him much joy. A proud do-it-yourselfer, Harold enjoyed "puttering around" and tinkering with things. Due to his broad knowledge of vehicles, equipment and construction, he was always available to help with family projects. When not spending time with his family, you could find Harold behind the wheel, traveling the back roads of Pennsylvania and beyond. He was a one-of-a-kind individual who you would never forget.
Surviving are his two children, Julieanna (Dave) Brown, Tennessee; and Nick (Miriam) Kapelan; his beloved grandchildren, Nicholas and Jack Kapelan, all of Bear Creek Twp.; a brother, Nicholas (Marlene), of Michigan; a sister, Helen Siconolfi, of Dunmore; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Alexander, Andrew, Joseph, Walter and John; and sisters, Mary Schwartzinger, Anna Zaleski, Julia Matias, Olga Sigler and Mildred Rosar.
The funeral will be private. Arrangements by the Semian Funeral Home LLC, 704 Union St., Taylor. Please visit the website to share memories or extend condolences.
