It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lawrence Murray O'Neill, lovingly known as Larry, who departed this world peacefully on Feb. 22, 2026, with his wife by his side at Corewell Health Merlin & Carolyn Hanson Hospice Center, Stevensville.
Born on Nov. 11, 1930, in Battle Creek, Mich., Larry lived a life rich in music, love and devotion to family and friends.
Larry was the cherished son of Lorena Williams and Paul O'Neill, who predeceased him. From a young age, Larry demonstrated a remarkable talent for music, which became a lifelong passion. He left home to join the Barnum & Bailey Circus, where he played the trombone in the band, setting the stage for a life filled with melody and harmony.
Larry proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, bringing joy and solace through his music as a member of the Air Force Band. His service instilled in him a profound sense of discipline and camaraderie, values he carried throughout his life.
After his military service, Larry and his family settled in St. Joseph. On May 4, 1973, in a beautiful ceremony in Acapulco, Mexico, Larry married his beloved Stasia. Their marriage of 52 years was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Together, they created a home filled with love, music, great dinners, laughter and warmth.
Larry's career was as diverse and dynamic as his musical talent. He worked at the House of Furniture in Benton Harbor before transitioning to a successful career in insurance. As a salesman for Bankers Life Company, he eventually became owner of his own insurance agency in Galien. Larry retired as vice president of Life and Health lines at Kemper Insurance Company, leaving a legacy of integrity and hard work.
A man of many passions, Larry was an avid fisherman, often finding peace and reflection by the water's edge. His love for travel took him and Stasia on countless adventures, creating lasting memories that they cherished deeply. Larry was also an accomplished musician, active in the church choir, municipal and local jazz bands, where his trombone and voice continued to bring smiles and joy to the community.
He leaves behind a loving family, including his devoted wife, Stasia; his daughter, Dawn Marie Myrick; grandson, Jason Robert Myrick (Rhonda); granddaughter, Kellie O'Neill Stevenson, and great-grandchildren: Alexandra Maree Potts (John), Mackenzie Jo Myrick, Bailey O'Neill Steiper (Kevin), Ashley Lauren Stevenson and Michael Aaron Stevenson. His legacy continues with great-great-grandchildren: Emmersyn Jae Potts, Jenson Bradley Potts, Kathryn O'Neill Steiper and Elizabeth Jade Steiper. Larry is also survived by his brothers-in-law: Jerry Gauger and Michael Gauger.
He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Victor Myrick.
Larry will be forever missed, but his spirit will remain with us, guiding us with love. May he rest in peace.
Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services. Arrangements are entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Chapel, St. Joseph. Oh my! Larry and Stasia have been greatly missed since their move from the grand northeast corner of State and Market Street in downtown St. Joseph. Larry would watch Stasia from the tall windows of their second floor residence as she did her thing out and about in the yard and building. He was Mr. Calm & Steady with a wonderful laugh - our neighbor "dad/grandpa".
