Edna Harkey Obituary

Mrs. Edna Ray "Butch" Harkey (Crane), age 95, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2026, in Caswell Beach, North Carolina. Born on July 5, 1930, in Union County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of Edna Antenucci and Ray Crane. Edna graduated from Waxhaw High School in 1948 and went on to have a distinguished career in the insurance industry. She broke barriers as the first woman to chair the North and South Carolina Life Underwriters Association for St. Paul/Western Life Insurance Company. After many years of dedicated service, she retired in 1988, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and leadership. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Edna was predeceased by her beloved husband, Harold Harkey; her parents; her son-in-law Randall Duckworth; and her brother-in-law Donald Hargett. She is survived by her four daughters: Bonnie Duckworth; Linda Stallings (Gene); Lisa McClanahan (Steve); and Betsy Moorhead (Mark). She also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Additionally, she is survived by her sister Jimmie Hargett; her brother Sanford Crane; and several nieces and nephews. Edna's life was marked by her deep faith and active involvement in church communities. Over the years, she was a dedicated member of First United Methodist Church in Charlotte, Marvin Methodist Church, and Weddington United Methodist Church. Her commitment to youth ministry at First United Methodist Church in Charlotte touched countless lives. A woman of many talents and interests, Edna enjoyed reading, writing, traveling, and spending time with her family. She took immense pride in ensuring that all her children received college educations-a testament to her belief in the power of learning. At the age of 85, she fulfilled a lifelong dream by writing and publishing her autobiography in 2015. Edna will be remembered as a loving matriarch who was vivacious, funny, strong-willed, and selfless. She was a role model to many-a leader who always thought of others before herself. Her family and friends will deeply miss her warmth and generosity. In keeping with her giving spirit, Edna chose to donate her body to Duke University Medical School for the advancement of medical education and research. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. William Alexander Newsom, and the staff at Dosher Medical as well as the Lower Cape Fear Hospice for all their support, professional and care for Edna. May Edna's memory bring comfort to all who knew her as they celebrate a life well-lived and honor the remarkable legacy she leaves behind.
