David Harris Obituary

David Lee Harris, 67, passed away peacefully at home on March 17, 2026. He was born on February 8, 1959, in Paoli, Indiana to Kenneth and Normadene Harris and was the second of six children in a hardworking family of five boys and one girl. He was preceded in death by his parents and his youngest brother, Michael. He is survived by his four siblings; Paul, Randy, Brian and Anita.

In 1979, following his graduation from technical school, David moved from Evansville, Indiana to North Carolina, where he built a life rooted in dedication, integrity, and perseverance. He spent 44 years as an engineer in the telecommunications industry, retiring in 2023 after a long and steady career. His newfound favorite motto was "Every day is Saturday" and he loved every minute of it.

In 2011, David met his "forever love" and moved to the river, where he found his piece of heaven. It was there that he truly settled into himself and they shared a beautiful life ~ surrounded and embraced by so much love, and a community he loved deeply, living life in a way that reflected who he truly was. He enjoyed peaceful living, live music, tasty food and bevs (aka known as "good groceries"), and the never ending good times including horse shoes, pool nights, day long river floats and fireside chats with so many friends and loved ones... pretty much only venturing far away for his beloved annual OBX fishing and canoe trips with his mates, and his yearly family reunion cabin time in Indiana. David came from humble beginnings, shaped by hard work and simple means. Throughout his life, dedication and integrity guided him. Later in life, he found a deeper sense of peace and connection, and those around him felt it. He was kind, steady, and genuine ~ a gentle soul. Anyone who met David knew his warmth. The number of lives he touched is immeasurable, and the impact of his loss is deeply felt by many.

He is survived by his loving partner, Terrie; his sons, Matt Harris (Tonya) and Chad Harris (Jennifer); his daughters, Krystal Barney (Jeff) and Katlin Barney (Jose); and Christian Ferri (Kelly) and Nic Ferri, who he welcomed and supported as his own. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

David did not want a formal funeral service and in order to honor his wishes, there will be a memorial celebration of his life which will be held by invitation the weekend of May 16th. You may reach out to the family for details. The family requests that any gifts honoring David's life be made to the charity of your choice.

Our families spent many race weekends and lake weekends together. The last time I saw Dave, he and I were singing REO Speedwagon at the top of our lungs at 2 in the morning. A true free spirit and a damn good guy.
